Now this party appetizer is delicious, but anything battered and fried is, right? You could probably throw a spare tire in batter and fry it up and it would be edible…ha, ha. These green “French fries” are quite tasty, especially when dipped into the spicy and sweet mustard. I made the big mistake of making these for a large party for over a hundred people and the gal helping me fry these at the event kitchen was covered in batter and by the end of frying these, we could have all mistaken her for a cement statue! So at your next party, put those French fries back in the freezer and whip up a batch of these beautiful tempura green beans.
Ingredients
4 cups of oil for frying like canola or vegetable oil
½ cup of sifted all-purpose flour
½ cup of corn starch
¼ cup toasted sesame seeds
1 cup of very cold light colored beer
½ teaspoons kosher salt
1 lb. of green beans, trimmed (regular sized, not the thin ones)
Sriracha Honey Mustard
Ingredients
½ cup of yellow mustard
½ cup of Dijon mustard
¼ cup of honey
1 tablespoon brown sugar
3 tablespoons of Sriracha sauce (can add more depending on how hot you want it)
Instructions
- Heat oil in a 4 quart pot or deep fry pan over medium high heat until fat thermometer registers 375 degrees
- While oil is heating, mix together all the ingredients for the Sriracha Honey Mustard and set aside
- In a large bowl mix together the flour, corn starch, sesame seeds, beer and salt , add the green beans making sure they are well covered in the batter
- When the oil is ready, drop a few green beans in the oil, ensuring not to crowd them in the pot and they don’t cling together, stirring occasionally with chop sticks or tongs, take out when golden brown and place on paper towel lined sheet pan, continue cooking until all of them are done and you can keep them warm in the oven set at 250 degrees F. sprinkle with a bit more salt and serve right away with the Sriracha Honey Mustard. Makes 8 appetizer servings
